I Entered My First Game Jam and I Did It Angry (V1 is out!)

This is the first full version of Do It Angry, with a few super silly levels and a healthy amount of rage baiting. It’s a short little game I made partially for Jamsepticeye, but mostly as a virtual love letter to adorably angry cartoon characters (Susie from Summer Camp Island, I adore you<3).

What you can do now:

·       Play through a prologue of unnecessary Captcha’s

·       Complete anger management tasks before the timer runs out

·       Experience depictions of mild cartoon violence and elder abuse

·       Pet that dog

What’s still cooking:

·       More levels and variety of mechanics

·       A scoring rank system so you can see how well you did

·       An alternative ending if you somehow manage to survive 100 levels???

I started this project with the goal of “make something silly and fun” but also to learn more about game dev and have another small game under my belt. This was meant to be a low-pressure project where I made something that gets faster and more unhinged over time.

It turns out I am describing my workflow.

Like with anything I do, I got way too invested, ignored all my other work for four days, and ended up finishing and uploading it at midnight when I had to leave to catch a flight at 2am that morning. Sleep is for the weak right?

Initially I had hoped to create more levels within the time allowed for the jam, however, when I was looking for more level ideas, a friend mentioned that captchas make him irrationally mad. Instead of continuing with the ‘anger management’ levels, I decided to use the rest of my time to make a prologue (which ended up being my favourite part of the gameplay).

As an artist, the visuals were one of my top priorities. After a bit of brainstorming and some very rough sketches, I used Procreate to draw up my polished assets. The most enjoyable part of making this was putting all the art into Unity and making it move! Little animations like shaking stars or dancing squiggles are my personal favourite part of any project, the whimsy they add to a scene brings me so much joy!

It’s safe to say I’m pretty stoked with the results! (we don’t talk about theme).

Jamsepticeye Results

Making Do It Angry has been ridiculously fun — I learned some new skills, I’m not ashamed to admit there were multiple times I was giggling to myself alone at my desk because of a stupid joke I made, and I created a tiny angry protagonist I adore more than some of my family members.

I’ll post another devlog when new levels are ready to play along with some of that sweet extra content, so feel free to follow if you’d like to see how stupid I can get with enough time and freedom.

Thanks for checking it out! Feel free to yell at me (nicely) in the comments if you have thoughts, feedback, or ideas you’d like our little rage monster to do next!

Until then, I don’t care what you do, but do it angry.
